Britton Konynenburg Partners
Located in the Central Valley of California, the Britton and Konynenburg families know a thing or two about growing apples, and running a successful business together. The families’ partnership began roughly 40 years ago and today fourth-generation sons Chris Britton and Paul Van Konynenburg, who took over for their fathers 15 years ago, are continuing the tradition. They work side by side as they expand their apple orchards to 500 acres.
“We love apples,” Britton says. “They’re fun to grow. They may take the most time and present the most risk, but for me it’s worth it. It’s what I spend most of my time doing.”
The partners primarily grow Galas, Fujis, Granny Smiths and Pink Ladies for wholesale or in retailers in California. Additionally, they grow cherries and peaches.
When asked whether his children will take on the operations after he retires, Britton says, “If they enjoy it and are passionate about it, then yes. But we do have one rule: they must go away and try something else first!”
